Interesting Encounter Today
I ran into a fairy today right behind the church. It was lazily reclining in midair, floating about two and a half feet high, and it took the form of a young man. Its outfit appeared to be one of those full-body aviator suits from the days of biplanes. I was sure I'd seen the man before in passing somewhere, perhaps on the subway, but I couldn't quite remember where--the fairy probably looked into my memories and reconstructed the face of someone I'd seen at random. It slowly rotated in the air, and when its eyes met mine it smiled warmly at me. Its face was so comforting that for a moment I completely forgotten the tragic nature of fairies and went to put my hand on its shoulder--but that moment was all it took. As soon as my hand touched the folds of its clothing, the fairy disappeared. My selfish impulse to touch the fairy had erased it from existence. Had the look on its face been any different I would have instantly sank into dispair, but something in its cosmic smile had preemptively forgiven me. Its expression was so calm that I didn't feel the slightest tinge of guilt. And this very knowledge--the existence of a being so kind it felt no resentment at being destroyed--flooded me with comfort. I wish I had taken a picture!
